Statistics M.M.M - Mean Median Mode

                 MEAN    MEDIAN     MODE
Statistics                                                           Name: Myztique

WALT- Identify the mean, median and mode within a collection of data

Activity One
Answer the questions in a different colour

The definition of the mean in a statistical investigation is commonly referred to as the average. It is the total of all the data divided by the amount of data shown.
For example: if we have this range of data 3,5,7,1,2,3,6,8

3+5+7+1+2+3+6+5  = 32  = 4
             8                      8

  1. Find the mean in this set of numbers
3,7,8,4,2,6,5,4,3,9 = 5.1
  1. Find the mean in the set of numbers
4,12,5,6,11,9,5 = 7.3
  1. Find the mean in this tally chart
Pets owned by students
Number of students

Cats
IIIII IIIII II
Fish

            10,12,4,2 = 12
  1. Find the mean in this set of numbers
24,12,16,18 = 17.5
  1. Find the mean in this set of numbers
5,9,12,4,10,7 = 7.5
  1. CHALLENGE QUESTION: Find the mean within this data, use the frequency table to help you
1,5,5,2,1,2,5,5,5,5,1,2,1,5,5 = 3.5

Total

Activity Two
Answer the questions in a different colour

The definition of the median is the middle number within a set of numbers that have been put in order from size (biggest to smallest or smallest to biggest)
For example: 2,6,4,1,9 = 1,2,4,6,9 and the middle number is 4.
BUT say if there is more than one middle number… the median is found by taking the number midway between the middle pair of numbers:
3,6,1,4,9,2 = 1,2,3,4,6,9 → 3 + 4 = 3.5
                                             2

Find the median in these sets of numbers

  1. 10,14,17,12,19,11,16 = 14

  1. 34,42,37,31,40  = 37

  1. 101, 167,138,124,198,149 = 143.5

  1. 54, 58,52,57,53,60 = 52 + 57 = 55.5

  1. 1001, 1094, 1023, 1065, 1038, 1027, 1042 = 1038

  1. Find the median within this tally chart

Now that’s thinking Diary

Name: Myztique, Seini, Cameo
Chosen Idea: Lockers

Each week write down what your group achieved.
  • Explain what you contributed towards that week's achievements.
  • Note any problems you or your group are experiencing.
  • What did you learn this week?

Need (Project)
Our Project is to make bag hooks for classrooms in the school who are in need of them. During our research we have learnt that only team 4 and 5 are the only groups that need bag hooks. In team 5 we have most of the student bags on the ground instead of on the bag hooks that we have in our space, some student say the we need more bag hooks so that the students bags can fit on one side of each bag hooks.

We met with Mrs Tele’a to confirm our project and we also shared with her the materials needed and the quantity needed to make this possible. We talked about how many hooks could fit on one pole and how many rows we wanted. Soon we decided to have eight on each pole for now and we also wanted a lock plan for the lockers as many are locked with lost combinations. We also talked about what we needed for our project and what the amount of bag hooks, screws and and hammers we need in this project.

For every Friday our team, team 5 split up into our inquiry groups (swimming groups). Room 3's Inquiry group is just our home class, today we had to continue working on our projects from last week which is making things that would make our school more successful. We had to list all the materials we need and let Mrs Tele'a know so that she would provide them for us.

I can do better in my IKAN test

Today my group Tapawha got to see our results on our  test. The thing that was different about our Ikan test was that we could go over our test twice if we needed extra time to do the answers again for the questions.   Another difference was that we used our own Chromebooks with our own headphones.  After the first test we got to sit the test again because some of the people in Tapawha had missed out some and thought that it would be good if we done our Ikan test again.

When we started the test I felt nervous and kind of relaxed at the same time, I also felt pressure coming in. When I was half way through the test I started feel pretty positive about my self and I thought I did alright on the first test and did better listening to it a  second time.

The next day ( which is today ) we marked our test. The different thing about marking our test was that we got to circle the ones that we got wrong but was a silly mistake because you knew the answer.   I was thinking of another question and forgot to answer the previous question then I ended up  missing it out.
Before our  teacher didn't let us do this but now she has told us that we could mark it circling the silly mistake we made.  This means I could also count this as question correct!
After looking at my own results - my data, I still need to improve in place value. My grades on the test this time are better than the last time we did our test.   I still find  place value on the tests a little hard.  I will work on this!

Accidental plastics and Persuasive writing

Title: Key Competency - Managing Self

Talofa Bloggers

Today our class is focusing on our Key Competencies. Our aim was to stay on task and see how much progress we make for reading and writing in one morning block. This should set the standard for how much work we complete each time we have literacy.

Our two learning intentions were:
WALT: 1. Show how much progress we can make in one literacy session
2. Articulate what we are learning about.

Here is my reading and writing work I completed today

Here is a recording of me explaining what I am learning about.
WALT: Use prior knowledge along with information in the text to interpret abstract ideas.
This text about how plastic was accidentally made during the 1900's. this text tells us who made the plastics during the 1900's and how he made the plastics. The name of the man the invented plastics was john hyatt.

WALT: how to capture an audience using persuasive writing.

The first day when we started doing these things was on Wednesday, but before we did any of that we had to get into our groups of three and make up a Group name, Group  and who were the to Group leaders. After that we found out what the other groups name was. One of the groups name was Fobalicous the other group was Munchies and Our group was called the Churries, through this whole week we've been doing fun activity's and challenges. Today is our last day of having the best time of our entire school week, The first challenge we did was building a tower with cups and un building them which was a bit hard but fun at the same time, Before it all ended the teacher had a race but just for fun.

Making Truffles with the CHURRIES Group

Today me and my group the CHURRIES got to do some cooking. In this cooking situation we made Truffles, with Chocolate chips, Cocoa Powder, Super Wine Biscuits, Deccicated Coconut and Condense Milk. The first thing we did was pour 3/4 cups of choc chips, then we had to smash and bash the super wine biscuits.  As soon as we finished smashing the biscuits we put the deccicated coconut in then poured in all the bashed biscuits. The last thing we poured in was a whole can of condensed milk. Then Lucky last we mixed it all together till it all was mixed in well together and it wasn't as gooey like it was before. Once all the groups finished mixing in the ingredients together we grabbed a medium sized piece and rolled it into a ball so that it would be easier for each group to roll it into the Deccicated coconut.

In 1999 there was a man named Ricardo that had been married to a lady Named Lynn, they were married for three years, Lynn was Maori and Ricardo was to. But then one day there was a tsunami that had killed over 100 people in Australia, and Ricardo got hurt and was lying on the ground, he had a stick sticking out of his stomach and couldn’t get up.Lynn didn’t know that he had got hurt so she was looking for him all around and she was lifting up wood to see if she could find him.

She was asking heaps of people but they wouldn’t help her so she just kept going until she found him. As she was walking around looking at all the houses that had been damaged she relized that there was a hospital that was under the ground so that if something  happened and people are still alive and hurt they could go to the hospital underground to stay alive. So she went to the hospital and thought that her husband would be there but he wasn’t there so she ask people have you seen this person around anywhere.

She was holding up the photo of him and they said no sorry i haven’t heard of a man called Ricardo. Then she walking out of the hospital and she said i am never gonna find my husband then she saw a man lying on the ground stick sticking out his stomach the she quickly ran over to see if was her husband and was Ricardo. Lynn ran quickly and was crying and she called the ambulance and they came right away.

Lynn asked the man is he gonna be alright but what she didn’t know was that the man was her husband. She didn’t know that because he had a lot of dirt and blood on his face that she couldn’t see his face properly. So she went with the ambulance to take Ricardo to the hospital. Lynn waited there till the man was ready to see her just to thank her for saving him.

The hospital people washed his face and took the stick out of his stomach so that he could survive. Once they were done Lynn got to go in and see if the man was okay. When she got there she sat down and the man turned his head and saw Lynn they both looked and each other then hugged happily. Lynn cried and cried because she was looking for him all day and night. Why people borrow books from the library

Why do we borrow books from the library.
T
Title - What you will be explaining

Introduction - Tell your audience what the topic is about and what is to be explained.
I
Information - Explain the elements or steps in a logical sequence
C
Conclusion - Final summarising statement, an evaluation or comment about what you have explained.

Title
Why do you borrow books
Introduction
These are reasons why people borrow books

Information
1st element
People borrow books from the library because it helps keep their brain going. They also borrow books because it can be very interesting to read. There are different types of books like, adventure, fantasy, romance, history, our days and excitement. There are also chapter books, comics, short books, novels and ordinary books.
Information
2nd element
People borrow books from the library because it helps them in their general knowledge. They also borrow books because it helps build up their vocabulary. People borrow books from the library because they enjoy reading and it’s free. The can borrow books from different author’s. Also because the library has many books to choose from. The nice thing about borrowing books from a library is that you can get as many books as you like for no cost (free) as long as you are a member of that library.
Information
3rd element
It’s good to get books because you can learn new words from it. The main thing about a book is that you have to understand it and you have to know the meaning of the words. When you are getting a  book from the library you have to make sure that you can read
Conclusion
Sometimes people don’t know what they are reading so that means that they could be reading it too fast, they can’t read it, they don’t know what the words mean and they don’t understand the whole meaning of the book.
